Distinguish a material category from a specific product. Review certification scope and instructions before agreeing on tank waterproofing.

For drinking-water tank waterproofing, calling a material epoxy or cementitious is not enough. Those are broad categories; the decision concerns a specific product, application system and intended use. Property owners should request clear documents for technical review and retain them with the scope rather than rely on a vague marketing claim.

Request the exact product name

Record the manufacturer and product name or code, and request the current technical data and instructions. Compare the quoted name with the product to be used. If it changes before installation, ask why and request updated documentation. Products are not interchangeable simply because they share a category or packaging colour.

Check the scope of any cited certification

NSF maintains a listing database for drinking-water system components, including tank coatings. When such certification is cited, check the specific product and current listing conditions rather than the logo alone. Certification of a product does not cover every product from its manufacturer or accredit the installer, and does not replace local project requirements.

Relate the documentation to the actual use

Ask the person selecting the product to explain its suitability for the tank and operating conditions. Read conditions and restrictions in full. A general statement about water resistance does not establish suitability for drinking-water contact. Request documented clarification from the relevant product authority before agreement if anything remains unclear.

Document the system and associated work

The quotation may include preparation, local repairs and other layers, not just a finish material. Request these items and the exclusions. Retain dated documents as a reference when discussing application changes or later maintenance.

Ask who verifies the installation

Correct documentation alone does not prove that installation followed the instructions. Agree how materials and work will be recorded and requirements checked before return to service. Colour, smell or appearance is not a drinking-water quality test. Do not enter the tank yourself to inspect its layers.
